What does a geyser replacement cost in South Africa?

A standard 150-litre electric geyser replacement, fully installed with a plumbing Certificate of Compliance, is published at roughly R6,500 to R12,000 in 2026. Solar and heat pump systems cost far more upfront. Here is what the published price lists say.

What pushes the price up
- Size and type. A 200L geyser costs more than a 150L; solar and heat pump systems cost several times more than electric.
- Access. Roof or ceiling installations take longer than a geyser in a garage.
- Extra parts. A burst geyser often needs a new drip tray, vacuum breakers, valves and element too.
- Compliance. Installation must meet SANS 10254 and be done by a registered plumber who issues a COC, according to Kwikot.
Before you say yes
- Phone your insurer before any repair if your geyser burst — most comprehensive building policies cover sudden bursts, but they want to hear first.
- Use a registered plumber and ask for the plumbing Certificate of Compliance (COC); insurers ask for it.
- Ask for an itemised quote: the unit, labour, fittings and COC listed separately.
- Keep the old geyser until the insurance assessor has seen it.
- Compare at least two or three quotes for the same size and brand.
